Agios Sozos

A Calm Refuge Near Balos

Just before you reach the famous Balos Beach, there’s a quiet little bay that many visitors never see. On the northeast side of the Gramvousa Peninsula, right above the parking area, lies Agios Sozon—a small white chapel and a beautiful, calm bay.

You can hike there, but the best way to visit is by private boat. The sea in this bay is almost always calm, even when the wind blows. The water is crystal-clear and turquoise, with a sandy seabed. It’s perfect for swimming and snorkeling, away from the crowds.

Agios Sozos – The Bay That Saved Lives

The chapel is dedicated to Saint Sozon, the protector of sailors. Old fishermen believed they were saved when they managed to reach this bay during storms. That’s how the place got its name. It’s where the sea “calms down” first, and boats could wait there safely until the weather improved.

Locals still visit the area, not just to swim. After hot days that follow windy weather, you might see people collecting natural sea salt from the rocks—another hidden treasure of Crete.

How to Reach Agios Sozos Bay

There are two ways to get to Agios Sozos.

The first is by land. If you’re heading to Balos Beach, you’ll find a small path about 100 meters before the final parking area. This trail leads east toward the chapel of Agios Sozon, which is actually visible from above if you look northeast from the parking. Keep in mind—the road to Balos is quite bumpy, and during summer it gets very crowded. If you decide to hike, we highly recommend going early in the morning to avoid the heat and the traffic. The terrain is rocky and dry, with no shade—like a desert.

The best way to reach Agios Sozon, though, is by private boat. With SEAze The Day, you can start your trip from Kissamos Port and enjoy a tailored cruise to Balos, Gramvousa, and other nearby hidden gems. These include Tersanas Cave, Agios SozosBay, and more remote beaches and sea caves only accessible by boat.

Agios Sozos Bay is more than just a stop on the way to Balos—it’s a peaceful retreat with a rich local story and breathtaking natural beauty. Calm, crystal-clear, and unforgettable.
