Its name, “Seitan Limania,” translates to “Harbors of Devil” which might sound ominous, but the beach’s outstanding beauty is nothing short of heavenly.

Seitan Limania Beach is located on the northeastern side of Akrotiri Peninsula, 22 km away from Chania City and around 8 km away from Chania International Airport.

By boat, the distance of the beach from Chania Old Harbour is about 14 nautical miles. As the option of reaching the beach by car includes an extra 15-minute hike down through a steep path that requires a bit of effort, the boat trip to Seitan Limania should be a recommended option offering unlimited views over the stunning rocky coast of Akrotiri Peninsula. In any case, your Bucket list should be filled by this mesmerizing slice of paradise that has captivated travelers from all corners of the globe.

This guide provides everything you need to know about Seitan Limania Beach, from its history and unique geography to tips on how to get there, things to do, and essential travel advice. Follow this guide to make the most of your visit, and you’ll walk away with memories (and photos) that will last a lifetime.

History and Origins

The name “Seitan Limania” has Turkish origins, as “Seitan” means “devil” and “Limania” means “harbors” in Turkish, dating back to the period of Ottoman rule on the island of Crete.

It’s believed that the challenging topography of the area’s three deep, narrow rocky coves  and turbulent waters where ships were seeking to be protected from strong winds inspired its “devilish” moniker. Historically, Seitan Limania coves also served as hideouts for pirates.

Over the years, Seitan Limania has transformed from a secluded local spot known only to fishermen and locals into one of Crete’s most Instagram not-to-miss destinations. Despite its growing popularity, it remains an unspoiled natural wonder that continues to attract adventurous travelers in search of tranquility and stunning scenery.

Things to do at Seitan Limania Beach

Marvel at the Unique Landscape

Seitan Limania Beach is unlike any other beach in Crete. Surrounded by sheer limestone cliffs, the beach’s signature feature is a narrow, fjord-like inlet that cuts through the rocky terrain to meet the crystalline waters of the Aegean Sea. The water’s intense shade of blue contrasts beautifully with the white pebbles on the shore, creating a surreal, otherworldly landscape.

Enjoy Swimming and Snorkeling

Despite its small size, Seitan Limania offers a variety of activities to keep visitors entertained. The beach’s unique topography provides natural shelter from the wind, making it a calm and relaxing spot. Since the rocky cliffs block strong winds, the calm and clear milky-turquoise waters of Seitan Limania make swimming a delight. Moreover, snorkelling is also popular, as the water’s clarity allows for excellent visibility of marine life.

Relax and Sunbathe

As the beach is protected from big waves and strong winds, it’s a great place to enjoy sunbathing. Relax on the soft white pebbles while soaking up the Mediterranean sun. Unlike larger beaches, Seitan Limania offers a more intimate, secluded sunbathing experience. However, bear in mind that the terrain of the beach is covered by shade during the afternoon due to the vertical rocky mountains that surround the beach.

Experience Cliff Diving

If you are more adventurous, the cliffs of the beach offer opportunities for cliff diving from different altitudes. However, as these cliff diving spots are not included in any organised facility with safety standards, you should firstly check the water’s depth before jumping, as it’s essential to ensure your safety.

Capture Stunning Photos

Tiktokers and Instagrammers, here you will find your paradise as for any photography lover, Seitan Limania is the right place! Undoubtedly, Seitan Limania is one of the most photographed Crete’s spots with its view from the top of the cliffs being simply iconic! Who could resist capturing this outstanding fjord-like channel that stretches out into the sea while being surrounded by dramatic cliffs? Perfect spots for capturing amazing photos are along the path that connects the beach with the parking area on the top of the cliff as well as from the beach terrain and the cliffs that surround the inlet.

Moreover, great pirate-like views to capture you’ll have if you reach the beach by a private boat.

Bear in mind that the beach itself lacks facilities, so you should buy your picnic products from the local markets in Chania City and the nearby villages.

Additionally, a small canteen located in the parking area is also available (open only during Summer time). Before leaving be sure to take all your trash with you, as there are no trash bins on site. And also to mention that …maybe you will have any unexpected visitors to your meal: the local wild goats! They might be sneaky and try to grab any slice of your food. Welcome them and enjoy!
